Today, Google, AirTrunk, and European Energy Australia announced that the 25-megawatt (MW) solar farm in the Riverina district of New South Wales is reaching completion and about to hit the grid.
Announced as an innovative corporate power purchase agreement (PPA) in 2023, the Mulwala Solar Farm will inject new clean energy capacity into the National Electricity Market (NEM). By bringing additional clean energy to the grid, this project supports Australia’s broader energy transition and benefits the local community, while also advancing Google’s ultimate aim to operate on carbon-free energy around the clock.
As Australia builds its digital future, this project shows what’s possible when global technology leaders, Australian infrastructure innovators, and renewable energy experts work together.
Powering the AI era responsibly
By matching growing digital needs with new additional clean energy, the partnership demonstrates that digital infrastructure can be a catalyst for Australia’s broader grid decarbonisation.
“Australia has ambitious energy goals, and we want to ensure the growth of the nation’s digital economy directly accelerates the transition to a cleaner grid,” said Bikash Koley, Vice President, Global Infrastructure, Google. “As part of Google’s Digital Future Initiative in Australia, Mulwala Solar Farm is an example of how AI and digital infrastructure can be built the right way, with clear community benefits. By partnering with the right local and international experts, we’re proving that the technology of tomorrow can be powered responsibly today.”
A collaborative path forward
Building a sustainable future requires teamwork. By linking digital infrastructure directly to new-build renewable energy generation, Google, AirTrunk, and European Energy Australia have created a blueprint for how the technology sector can partner locally to bring more clean energy into Australia’s energy mix.
Damien Spillane, Chief Customer and Innovation Officer, AirTrunk, said: “We believe hyperscale data centres can help accelerate Australia’s energy transition by supporting investment in new renewable energy and strengthening long-term energy security. This collaboration shows how the industry can work together to bring more renewable energy online while creating lasting benefits for local communities.”
Catriona McLeod, Managing Director, European Energy Australia, said: “Partnerships like this one give the industry confidence as we develop more solar and wind farms and bring more renewables online. It’s a perfect example of how major tech companies and renewables developers can work together to support the energy transition.”
